Career Development

Career Development can include Career Guidance, Psychometric Assessment of personality, abilities and interests as well as managing career goals throughout your working life.

Making a career choice is not just about matching your subjects to a course or job, but rather entails creating a balance between what you know about yourself (your interests, abilities and personality), what you know about the working world (types of careers) and what is available to you (courses to study and job markets). What you value in career development is also an important aspect to consider. You need to take into account if you would value academic achievement, financial security, travel opportunities or job security, to name a few values.

I have had over 5 years experience at a South African University assessing learners, students and adults and guiding them to making informed and well suited career choices. Psychometric based assessments can be extremely useful and provide relevant information to inform a career related decision, however, these can be costly and may not encompass all aspects of the career choice process, not to mention that some psychometric tests are not always be suited to the South African population. You can consider both a psychometric assessment or narrative career counselling approach.

Narrative career counselling allows you to take all the above mentioned aspects and create an understanding of your career needs and plans, through facilitated discussion rather than assessment.
